We would like to thank our University of Malta partner Alan Deidun for his participation at the 1st BlueMissionMed Stakeholder Event, ‘Shaping the Future of the Mediterranean Basin to Respond to EU Mission Ocean and Waters’ Objectives’. As part of this event, Alan highlighted the ANDROMEDA project’s citizen science campaign which focuses on engaging members of the public in beach clean activities, and collecting microplastic data for 

The ANDROMEDA citizen science campaign and smartphone application feature in the BlueMedMission booklet as an inspirational case study, exemplifying actions that focus on citizen engagement, and ocean and water literacy. This case study is contributing to Targets 7 (Zero plastic litter generation) and 2 (Marine and freshwater observation is streamlined and is available to all) of the Mission for Healthy Oceans and Waters (Mission Starfish) through the integration of citizen science actions and methodologies, Artificial Intelligence and the recovery of microplastics from European-wide beaches through an innovative smart phone app.
