Scientist Perspectives on the Cost-Effectiveness of Microplastic Analysis Methods

Andromeda parters at MaREI, University College Cork recently wrapped up two online workshops on cost-effective microplastic analyses methods for seawater sampling. The workshops were specifically developed to allow for discussion and feedback on a survey designed and implemented by ANDROMEDA project partners, which was led by Nelle Meyers and colleagues from VLIZ & ILVO. The first workshop, held on 1 February 2023, presented the findings of this survey to scientists and researchers currently working in the field of microplastics, including those from ANDROMEDA’s sister projects (FACTS, i-Plastic, MicroplastiX).

The following document presents the findings from the first ANDROMEDA workshop. In this report, you’ll find summaries of key topics of discussion — including MP size class, the diversity of analytical methods, financial context, and government monitoring programmes — as well as recommendations made by researchers currently working in the field.

A second report will be released soon documenting the results of Workshop No. 2, which presented the same findings to policy and decision-makers. Check back again soon!
